75 years since victory: Susan Eisenhower and Leonard Fullenkamp on VE Day and the legacy of the Second World War

Looking back on the war from 75 years [later], what we should be thinking about today is the sacrifice that generation made, the extraordinary things that they did. ... 16 million Americans stood to arms and joined the forces that fought in that war.” — Col. Leonard Fullenkamp

In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of VE Day, Susan Eisenhower hosted a conversation with Col. Leonard Fullenkamp, who served as Dwight D. Eisenhower Chair of National Security at the Army War College. They discussed the importance of the occasion and the insights from World War II that still ring true today.

In the last several months, we have seen the world change around us. The challenges facing us, already serious, are now compounded by economic uncertainty and new threats to public health. As part of our mission to promote non-partisan discourse and critical analysis of long-term issues, the Eisenhower Institute is hosting EI Live, an ongoing series of conversations featuring expert perspectives to help make sense of the world around us and lift up lessons from the legacy of Dwight D. Eisenhower.

You can join us on Tuesdays at 4:00 p.m. ET on our website and Facebook for future iterations of EI Live, or visit our YouTube page to watch past conversations.
